Rebuilding an early '64 (July 17) 289. What is the correct engine color? I have heard Ford blue on early models, but also have heard black with gold valve covers and breather. And what about the water pump... natural or black?

NOT Ford Blue, the gold/black regime is right but I thought it was the other way around, gold engine, black valve covers, etc. Don't paint it blue til you find the right combo. Tech help at mustangsunlimited has been helpful for me on ither things.

Howdy! I see you have not received many answers. I am not prepared with details at this time but, I will point you down the right road. Only a scarce few early 64 production 260 V8 engines were painted blue. All others should be painted black (water pump included). Most all of the black V8 engines had gold valve covers and air cleaner housings. I do not remember if any black 289 V8 engines had the blue valve covers and air cleaners, if so, it was very few. I believe I can find out it if it becomes needed (Ex. You would prefer blue over gold but, wish to be correct). Hope I have helped. I have been down this same road in the past.
